Leslie Abraham’s teaching career commenced at The Hammond School in Chester, UK teaching Jazz dance on the vocational course, before achieving a classical ballet teaching qualification with The Royal Academy of Dance. Continually she enjoys teaching and choreographing dance and have choreographed for various productions and dance schools in classical ballet, contemporary and national character dance, rehearsing and adapting roles to suit the production requirements. Many of her former students have established professional performing careers. Former students have achieved excellent results in areas such as HSC Dance (Contemporary Dance), Ballet performance competitions and RAD vocational examinations including Solo Seal exam level. Consistently full time dance students enjoy her open ballet classes, mentoring and individual coaching.
Leslie has been fortunate to have trained and worked with reputable and inspiring dance and performance professionals including; John O’Connell, Joan and Monica Halliday, Jane Beckett, David Atkins, Loise Strike, Graham Watson, Luke Amyot (The National Ballet of Canada), Richard Sugarman (The Royal Winnipeg Ballet) and Laura Connor (The Royal Ballet. UK.).
As a teacher and choreographer she aims to facilitate the achievement of high artistic standards and learning outcomes for ensemble performances, emerging artists and dance students. Most importantly her aim is to instill a high level of confidence in each individual, whilst striving to pursue the passion in dance art.
With over twenty five years experience as a dance teacher/choreographer her attention is drawn to emerging artists and the vocational level students. In 2014 teaching both the spring and autumn workshops taking open ballet classes for The Royal Academy of Dance NSW region. Regularly she is coaching open class technique full time and part time students seeking extra technical assistance.
Leslie is an outside assessor for Tertiary level contemporary dance students at The Wesley Institute, Sydney, also tutoring as an outside tutor choreographing and instructing all aspects of the NSW Board of Studies HSC Dance Curriculum. She has taught recently at Studio Tibor, Brent Street, Ecole Dance Studios and presently regularly assisting independent students with individual coaching. She also is assisting The Joanne Williamson Dance Studio with Classical Ballet and choreographing for the school’s end of year production.
Canadian born and raised in Australia her professional career commenced as a dancer with Opera Australia. Continuing internationally to Japan (Cabaret style Jazz (Virginia Ferris choreographer), Contemporary dance, Vancouver, Canada working as a freelance dancer and working with a variety of choreographers and performance opportunities. National Character Dance with Folk Ballet Theatre, Toronto, “ Goldilocks and the Three Bears” (A dancing on pointe Mamma Bear)- Pantomime in Toronto, Canada and performing as an actor in ‘Animal Farm’ touring Northern Italy. This production rehearsed in London, UK where she chose to move to after the duration of this tour. While living and working in London as a freelance dancer the dance hub of Pineapple Dance Studios in Covent Garden exposed her to wonderful teachers with diverse styles. Towards the end of her performing career, she toured Europe on an audition circuit, taking company classes including with The Culburg Ballet in Sweden. Opportunities to perform continued in Germany, although she decided to pursue her true love of teaching and choreographing. Training included the Royal Academy of Dance and achieving the Advanced examination level. As well as open classical ballet, contemporary dance (Martha Graham), dance history, drama and National Character dance styles. Original full time training was with Joan and Monica Halliday, Sydney.
Other experiences that have supported and inspired Leslie’s career were to have performed on stage at the same time as Dame Joan Sutherland in Les Huguenots. While living in London, she also worked at Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club offering exposure to wonderful Jazz Musicians, their music and their artistry.
